Creative Spelling
Aug 23rd, 2007 by scrappitydoodah
Most mornings, the kids and I have been taking a few moments to write in our journals. Sometimes one of us will pick a topic, sometimes the topics are up to each writer; after we finish, each of us has the choice to read our entries aloud. During this time, I encourage creative spelling (or is that inventive spelling?) because this exercise is about the creative process and putting thoughts to paper. I often will go back after we read aloud and help with any words they want to spell correctly, but it’s not a requirement.
In addition to these journals, they each have a blank book or two in their rooms to use for whatever they wish…making lists, drawing, venting, what have you. These are private and I don’t venture into them. Today The Comet, who is six, had placed his private journal on his nightstand, and I just happened to glance at the cover, on which he had written
MY GURNLL
and for some reason, that just made my heart melt and my mouth smile.
I LOVE your approach to writing. I bet your kids will always approach writing as a process of exploration rather than with fear. What is gurnll?
Thanks, Stephanie. “Gurnll” is how he spelled “journal.”
